HOW WE DO IT

St. John Ambulance have provided a Volvo V70 T5 fast response car that the Scheme uses to attend emergency calls quickly and safely. The car is well stocked with a range of advanced medical equipment that is designed to supplement that found in YAS ambulances.

A pager carried in the car is automatically notified of pre-determined emergency call codes from the YAS computer system. If the team on duty feels the job might benefit from their presence, YAS control passes the details to the car via a datalink and the information can be read on a computer screen.

The car can be tasked directly from YAS control if it is immediately felt a job requires a doctor's attendance. Ambulance crews already at the scene of an accident also generate requests for the car to be dispatched.

The on board computer is linked to a GPS navigation system that guides the team quickly to the location of the incident - vital when working in such a large geographical area.

The datalink is used to send information back to YAS, allowing the control centre to know exactly where the car is and when it is ready to be dispatched to its next job.
